Additionally, over 200 volunteers, of all ages, take part in the annual planting days. Many volunteers also adopt beds to care for throughout the summer season. Volunteers come from the outstanding Master Gardener Program of Michigan State University Extension Service, greater Kalamazoo area garden clubs, students from local schools, Western Michigan University and interested members of the community. Assembly and planting of the Kalamazoo Peacock and the Portage canoe depend on volunteers with a very specialized set of skills.
